WWII Draft

One of the most anticipated events in the history of the United States involved almost the whole male population in the 1930’s decade. At any point in time, you as a male over the age of 18 would most likely be going off and placing your life on the line for your country. Most of the men were alright with that, seeming as though every other male that was close to you or you have known for your entire life would be going also. For any person who was in that draft, it was a life changing experience, whether you lived or died. There is no telling or being able to understand what those men saw and what they had to do to survive in the war of WWII. I’m sure most of us could not imagine if tomorrow there was a draft for all of us men from the ages of 18-25. Our goals in life and all that we have worked for through school and what not, would not mean one thing.
As a male who is 19 in the United States today, I could not even begin to imagine what that feeling would be like. Sitting at your house dreading that phone call or the letter from the U.S. government would be a very stressful time. Once you were drafted, you were placed in something that would change your life forever. Some boys had just turned 18 years old, and had become a man. Some had just turned 25 years old and had just started a family. Even some of the men had just started to have kids, and their children would have to wait years to meet their father. It was not a natural site to see, if you saw a healthy middle aged man walking the streets during this war. Almost all men that were able to perform the physical tasks that soldiers need, were in the war. It was almost embarrassing if you were at home and were able to fight. Most of the Americans looked down on you if you did not join the other men in fighting for their country.

There were obviously a tremendous amount of young men off fighting for the miltary. The boys pictured above to the right, were young men taht were drafted into the military. Clearly after looking at them, you can tell that they do not look like the type of men taht could go out and kill other people. They look incredibly young and undeveloped. They had lives to life still, and for some of them, they did not get the chance to do so. I believe the military draft for WWII was a bad decsion, due to the fact that they were taking such young men to go fight, without them being able to decide for themselves.
